The sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is an encounter with Christ, the Divine Healer. It is a profound expression of God's mercy and the Church's care for those experiencing the difficult trials of illness and aging. If you are a baptized Catholic and suffering from serious illness or injury or will soon receive serious surgery, you should receive this sacrament. Anointing of the Sick can be received repeatedly as needed.
The Sacrament of Anointing unites the recipient with Christ's passion and is a a participation in His redemptive power. It strengthens us to endure suffering by providing grace for perseverance and courage and peace and trust in God's will. If we are facing death, it will also help us in hope to accept a happy death and prepare us for eternal life.
If it is an accord with God's will and conducive to our salvation, this sacrament can give us restoration of physical health. Anointing also forgives our sins if we are not able to receive the Sacrament of Penance.
Note that Anointing of the Sick is not the same thing as "Last Rites". Last Rites contains Confession, Anointing, and Viaticum (final Eucharist for the journey)
If you or someone you know is suffering a serious illness, please call the Church Office at 281-485-2421 to request this sacrament. Anointing of the Sick is also celebrated communally after 7pm Mass on the first Wednesday of the month.
